Trauma Counseling Program
The Chadwick Center’s Trauma Counseling (TC) Program specializes in helping children and their families heal from traumatic events, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, community violence, domestic violence, sexual assault or witnessing a crime. TC offers assistance to children and families through individual, group and family therapy, as well as advocacy, case management, safety planning and information or other referrals through a variety of funding sources. The staff is composed of Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs), Psychologists and Victim Advocates. All of the staff specialize in trauma, abuse and working with children and their families.
Trauma Assessment Pathway (TAP)
All of the families who come to treatment go through a comprehensive assessment (evaluation) using the TAP model developed by staff. Every family’s unique situation is assessed through clinical interviews, behavioral observation and standardized measures to assess symptoms. The TAP model considers culture, strengths, developmental history, family history, trauma history, as well as a wide range of symptoms and behaviors. Information is gathered from multiple sources, including family members and other significant people in the child’s life, as appropriate (Teachers, Doctors, etc.). After all of the information is collected and analyzed, the Therapist is able to select the best type of treatment, such as an evidence-based practice or other type of treatment modality like play therapy, group therapy, etc.
Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs) and Treatment
Evidence-based practices are types of treatment that have been proven successful through research that has been reviewed by others in the mental health field. Staff have been specially trained and are experienced in utilizing EBPs whenever possible. Some of the EBPs provided include Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT).
Support from parents and/or caregivers is the most important predictor of the child’s ability to make a successful recovery from the trauma. Therefore, TC also offers caregiver support for non-offending caregivers.
