The Kids and Teens in Court program is one of the many programs at the Chadwick Center designed in accordance with the agency’s mission to provide prevention, intervention, and education programs to children and their families. The program assists children, teens, and their families for the courtroom experience by 1) teaching relaxation skills; 2) providing education about the court process and their rights and; 3) introducing the courtroom and offering an opportunity to participate in a mock trial.
The goal of the Kids and Teens in Court program is to increase children’s ability to competently and effectively participate in the courtroom experience by decreasing their anxiety, and in turn, improving/ensuring the efficacy of the judicial process.
At no time during the Kids and Teens in Court program are specific cases discussed, as the program is a non-biased, court preparatory program
Criminal and Juvenile court Programs
Kids and Teens in Court for criminal cases takes place on the first three Thursdays each month, 6-8pm. Children, teens, and caregivers are recommended to attend all three sessions. The first Thursday session is held at the Chadwick Center, located at 3665 Kearny Villa Rd, Suite 501, San Diego, CA 92123. The first session focuses on teaching relaxation skills and initial courtroom familiarization.
The second and third Thursday sessions are held at the Hall of Justice, located at 330 West Broadway, San Diego, CA, 92101. The second and third sessions provide more detailed information regarding the court process and provide an opportunity for participants to meet a district attorney, a judge, a victim advocate, as well as participate in courtroom role-plays.
Criminal Kids and Teens in Court is held at the Chula Vista Courthouse on the fourth Thursday each month, 4-5pm
Kids and Teens in Court for Juvenile/Dependency Court Cases
Kids and Teens in Court for Juvenile/Dependency Court Cases takes place on the first and third Tuesday each month, 12-1 pm at the Juvenile Courthouse, located at 2851 Meadowlark, San Diego, CA 92123. The sessions include teaching anxiety management skills, courtroom roles and witness rights. The children also participate in a short mock-trial and have the opportunity to meet a judge.
