San Diego Attractions ![]() Mission Valley is a wide valley trending east-west in San Diego, California, through which the San Diego River flows to the Pacific Ocean. Mission Valley is named after Mission San Diego de Alcala founded on July 16, 1769 by Father Junipero Serra, the first of 21 missions founded through out California. At the southwestern end is Presidio Park. Mission Valley serves as an important shopping and entertainment center for San Diego. Three major shopping malls are located in Mission Valley - Fashion Valley Mall, Hazard Center Mall and Westfield Mission Valley. Qualcomm Stadium is home to the San Diego Chargers and San Diego State University Aztecs football teams. Sea World, Mission Bay, Old Town and many other San Diego attractions are within easy access.
![]() Shelter Island is a man-made peninsula, but for decades it was just a sand bar. In the early-‘50’s, the city and developers turned it into an “island” giving shelter to yachts, and to people. It is 1.2 miles of well-landscaped hotels, ship handlers, yacht clubs, and a park with one of the best views of the city.
Enjoy the magnificent view of downtown San Diego skyline with Mission Hills and Old Town in the distance. North Island’s iconic twin hangars are directly across. You can make out the lovely arch of the San Diego-Coronado Bridge. Farther right is the channel that leads to the sea and tip of Point Loma. On a really clear day, you can see Mexico’s Coronado Islands.
A visitor could spend the whole day looking at it all, watching the sunlight and clouds, boats, big and small, sail-quiet and outboard-noisy running around the bay. A seal barks or a gull scolds. You stroll and listen and look: The Friendship Bell, a gift from the people of Yokohama Japan; the Tuna man’s Memorial larger-than-life fisherman hauls in a big one; next to the children’s playgrounds is a tiny statue of a little girl blowing bubbles.
You can wander out onto the fishing pier and check up on what’s being caught or stop by the weekend art sales in the park. You’re relaxed. You’ve had a well-deserved break and learned how to slow down again. Consider yourself Sheltered!
