A 28-year veteran of the banking industry, Douglas F. Sawyer assumed the leadership of United Way of San Diego County in July 2005 as President & Chief Executive Officer.  With a desire to give back to the community, he decided to leave the banking industry to take the position.

 

Prior to joining United Way of San Diego, Sawyer was President and Chief Executive Officer of Legacy Bank when it opened as a full-service commercial bank in December 2002.  He was instrumental in assembling the bank’s management team, raising capital, and gaining regulatory approval to launch the bank.

 

Sawyer joined Bank of America in 1992 as executive vice president of the Central California region with 148 branches.  Shortly thereafter, he became executive vice president and region manager with responsibility for retail banking centers in Orange, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino and Imperial Counties.  He most recently served as the bank’s market president in San Diego, coordinating all operations in San Diego County.  From 1998 through 2001, he was the senior executive for the Small Business Banking division of Bank of America in California, leading a team of associates responsible for providing banking products and services to nearly 500,000 California businesses with annual revenue under $10 million.

 

His banking career began in 1977 as vice president & branch manager of Great Western Savings & Loan for two years.  He moved on to Great American Bank from 1979-1990, where he held a variety of positions, including division manager, over a period of 11 years.

 

Sawyer’s community involvement includes board membership in The Children’s Initiative, Community Health Improvement Partners (CHIP), San Diego Neighborhood Funders, USD Advisory Board, San Diego Grantmakers, Nonprofit Management Solutions (NMS) and Advisory Committee member of the Senior Community Centers of San Diego.  He is a past chairman of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce where he continues to serve on the Board of Directors.  In addition, he serves as President-elect of the Board of Directors of the Holiday Bowl football game.

 

His many and varied past community activities included board membership in numerous organizations including the United Way of San Diego from 1990-1995, Senior Community Centers of San Diego, American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter, LEAD San Diego, Children’s Hospital Foundation, San Diego Opera, San Diego Dialogue, NFL Youth Education Town, Globe Theatre, Reuben H. Fleet Space Theatre, STAR Systems, The Naturelands Project, USD Real Estate Institute, McGill Circle, and Leadership Trust as a Founding Member.

 

Sawyer attended San Diego State University and the University of Virginia’s Graduate School of Retail Banking.  He is married with three grown children.
