E2 EVALUATION FINDINGS FROM THE SAFE START INITIATIVE: IMPLICATIONS FOR RESEARCH AND PRACTICE FOR CHILDREN EXPOSED TO VIOLENCE

 

Kristen Kracke, Safe Start Initiative Coordinator and program manager for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), developed and manages the national Safe Start initiative which encompasses a $10 million dollar annual commitment to prevention, intervening, responding and treating children exposed to violence. Ms. Kracke has been leading the development of promising approaches in the field of children’s exposure to violence for the past seven years and has been directing collaborative systems change efforts to improve policy and practice for children and families for at least 15 years. Most notably, this work has involved the development of several initiatives within her office including SafeFutures and Systems Improvement Project on training and technical assistance.  She has served as the lead representative for collaborative systems change initiatives for OJJDP.  

 

Prior to OJJDP, Ms. Kracke worked with the Vice President's National Performance Review to improve services to children and families and strengthening the partnership in intergovernmental service delivery.  She entered federal service as a Presidential Management Fellow after working for seven years in the State and local levels of the public sector and in the private, non-profit sector.

 

Ms. Kracke completed a Masters in Social Welfare in the area of management and planning for children and families at the University of California, Berkeley and a B.A. with honors in Psychology from the University of Texas.  She has published, presented and consulted on these issues nationally.
