N11 THE MYTH OF MASCULINITY: HOW MASCULINE GENDER ROLE STRESS TRIGGERS RELATIONSHIP VIOLENCE
Presenter: Stacy Buhbe Abstract Category: Domestic Violence Instruction Level: Intermediate Presentation: Not Provided
Description: Explore the complicated dynamics of gender roles and relationship expectations that affect partner behavior and sometimes lead to violence.
Abstract: This 1.5 hour course will address gender dynamics in domestic violence through a three part, building-blocks approach. First, it will introduce the standard of Domestic Violence treatment, emphasizing the 52-week probation approved program for court-mandated offenders. Next, a brief discussion of gender roles and expectations of masculinity will be presented. Questions will be posed about who men are today, and how we expect them to behave. Then, using the most current research on offender typology, participants will come to understand the “masculinity traps” that can underlie intimate partner violence, particularly for male offenders. Diversity issues around age, class, ethnicity and sexual orientation will be discussed. Throughout the presentation, participants will be asked to reflect on their own gender roles and gender expectations, and how our perceptions might affect work with this population. Power point slides will guide the discussion.
