Description: This workshop will describe how dissociation is exhibited during a forensic evaluation and how to strive for an accurate disclosure.
Abstract: There is much research on how trauma affects children’s memory and how dissociation is a way to cope with overwhelming fear, helpless, and inability to escape from being hurt. Yet, there hasn’t been much exploration in the forensic arena examining how children exhibit dissociative symptoms and how to take their dissociation into consideration when doing a forensic evaluation. This workshop will present an understanding of dissociation, a description of how dissociative symptoms are exhibited during a forensic evaluation and how to manage an evaluation to minimizes dissociative symptoms and maintain an accurate outcome of protective service issues. Segments of a training DVD, sponsored by The International Society for the Study of Trauma & Dissociation, conducted by leaders in the field of forensic evaluations and dissociation, will be viewed that discusses the challenges of conducting forensic evaluations with traumatized children, examines the neurobiology of trauma and how it affects the memory system and legal challenges.
