Description: Discussion will focus on recent developments in research on the radiographic and clinical characteristics that help in differentiating acute, subacute and chronic subdural hemorrhage in children with abusive head trauma.
Abstract: Our understanding of the identification and evolution of subdural hematomas (SDH) has undergone changes over the past decade. Newer research has added to our knowledge about the pathophysiology and imaging characteristics of SDH and has enhanced our views toward identifying and differentiating acute, subacute and chronic SDH. This talk will review the pathophysiology of SDH formation and growth, as well as the radiographic and surgical characteristics of various forms of SDH.
Learning objectives
At the conclusion of the presentation, participants will:
1) Understand nomenclature related to the terms acute, subacute and chronic subdural hematomas 2) Identify the timing and evolution of subdural hematomas on imaging (CT and MRI) studies 3) Understand the limitations of timing subdural hemorrhages based upon radiographic imaging
