Abstract: “Who are these guys? And who are these women?”
Recent research in the field of determining different types of domestic violence offenders has yielded valuable insights into how and why domestic violence takes place. We know now that the men who commit these acts have a wide variety of motivations, triggers for aggression, personal history, personality style. And they operate in different kinds of relationships. And we know that there is such a thing as female domestic violence, and women also have widely differing motivations and patterns in their own violent behavior.
This workshop will help the audience members understand the overall similarities among domestic violence offenders. Johnson’s research about “intimate partner terrorism” vs. “situational couple violence” will be highlighted, as well as Holtzworth-Munroe’s groundbreaking typologies will be presented.
The workshop will illuminate the role of psychopathy in domestic violence. Finally, controversial new typologies for female domestic violence offenders will also be reviewed and critiqued.
