Abstract:

If we are serious about preventing domestic violence then we must focus on the lives of adolescents.  As many as one third of teenagers report the cycle of violence within their dating relationships. Preventing  violence in young adults is not only critical for their well-being as young people but sets the stage for the health and well  being of their relationships as adults.  Healthy relationships should have a foundation that is based in violence -free and fear- less intimacy. The training ground for healthy relationships and families in is  adolesence. There is much that adults can do and young people can help themselves and eachother. Changing social norms and attitudes are part of the prevention strategies as are educating everyone as to the dynamics of TDV and the warning signs and positive steps to help. The community,  including schools and families  can support healthy relationships and protect from abuse.
