Description:

A roadmap to doing a good job when asked to peer-review articles submitted to medical journals.

Abstract:

Each person will have an individual approach to reviewing articles submitted to journals. However, there are several principles one can apply to insure that an objective and accurate appraisal is made. There are opportunities to help the authors strengthen their papers. There is also an obligation to avoid endorsing publications of sub-optimal research. Errors in papers can be spotted and suggestions made to correct them. Advice can be given to the editors who make the ultimate decision about acceptance, rejection or modification. Sometimes it is necessary to ask for help from colleagues on issues not well-known to you as a reviewer, such as statistical analyses. And sometimes it is necessary to say no to a request to review when it is not in your field of expertise.
