J5 USING SERUM BIOMARKERS TO SCREEN FOR INFLICTED TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY: HOW CLOSE ARE WE TO CLINICAL USE? UPDATE
Presenter: Rachel Berger Abstract Category: Medical Instruction Level: Intermediate Presentation: Click Here and Click Here
Description: We will discuss new data and findings related to the use of blood biomarkers to screen for inflicted traumatic brain injury.
Abstract: Over the past several years, there has been considerable interest in developing blood tests which could be used to screen for inflicted traumatic brain injury (e.g. shaken baby syndrome). In this session, we will briefly discuss some of the clinical background for why this is needed, review some of the early studies suggesting that this might be feasible and then focus on more recent studies, their implications, and the steps and barriers to bringing this to clinical care. Specifically, we will focus on development of new point-of-care devices for measurement of serum biomarkers and the use of proteomics to develop point-of-care panels.
