Abstract:

ECPAT will present when and how trafficking of children for sexual purposes results in the production of child pornography, child sex tourism, and other sexually exploitative situations for children. The presentation will cite specific patterns and examples of children trafficked across borders for exploitation by in-coming tourists or children trafficked and forced to participate in the production of pornography. The role of demand for child sex and the issue of illicit profit-generation will also be addressed.

ECPAT International is a global network dedicated to eliminating the commercial sexual exploitation of children, comprising 81 members in 74 countries. In 1996, ECPAT, UNICEF and the NGO Group for the Convention on the Rights of the Child co-organized the First World Congress against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children, hosted by the Swedish Government in Stockholm. The Agenda for Action, providing for specific actions to be taken to prevent, protect, rehabilitate and reintegrate child victims of commercial sexual exploitation, was then declared by 122 governments. Significant efforts to combat commercial sexual exploitation of children were made in the following years, and in 2001, during the Second World Congress against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children, the Agenda for Action was reaffirmed by 159 governments.
