Abstract:

The psychology of pimping and pathways into prostitution will be the topics of this presentation. While our understanding of the women and children working in prostitution is growing, very little research has considered the men and women living off of the avails of prostitution. These panderers or pimps are a difficult group to prosecute and even more difficult to study. The information that we know about pimps comes primarily from the women being pimped and will be outlined in this presentation. Research that focuses directly on the characteristics of pimps will also be highlighted (e.g., psychopathy).  The overlap in the psychological constructs and techniques used by batterers and pimps will also be discussed.  Research on the specific patterns of entering into prostitution will be presented.
