Abstract:

Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS)

The inventor of PAS, Richard Gardner, M.D., passed away in 2003. But did PAS survive his passing?

This workshop will discuss the etiology of PAS, how its domains expanded, and recent uses of PAS. The workshop will differentiate PAS, as described by Gardner and expanded by other mental health and legal professionals, from alienation that can occur when children experience divorce. The potential sources of the latter alienation will be discussed.

A case example of an alienated child will be presented and case management strategies for cases where Parental Alienation Syndrome is being proposed will be described. Recent writings and uses of PAS will be reviewed.
