Abstract:

This workshop will offer an overview of San Diego County’s Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team and how it effects system change and improves system response to prevent future deaths. The presentation will include the team’s findings over the past 11 years, including the identification of major lethality risk factors, children’s exposure to domestic violence and fatality, how to integrate family involvement and input into the team process.

The San Diego County Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team examines fatalities from intimate partner violence to better understand the lethality risks and relationship dynamics in order to prevent future deaths.  This presentation will include a summary of the data since the team’s inception in 1996, with a focus on children and teens exposed to domestic violence and affected by fatality.  A case presentation on the experience of a young mother who was a victim of an attempted intimate partner homicide and her insights will also be presented.  As a response to the number of children affected by domestic violence, we will also address San Diego County’s development of a countywide system of care for children (0 to 18) exposed to domestic violence as well as building community awareness and greater professional expertise.
