Description:

This workshop describes recent programmatic and clinical developments in the application of AF-CBT with diverse families, focusing upon both child and caregiver directed interventions.

Abstract:

Across two sessions, this workshop will describe several programmatic and clinical developments in the application of AF-CBT with diverse families who present with a range of clinical concerns that fall along a continuum that spans the use of harsh/excessive physical discipline and formal child physical abuse. Applications being conducted in a variety of settings and programs on an outpatient basis will be featured (e.g., clinic, in-home).

The first session will focus upon the role of offender treatment and discuss several issues, methods, and adaptations relevant to engaging and educating caregivers who use harsh or abusive physical discipline with their children. The procedures will illustrate methods to help promote both intrapersonal and interpersonal skills designed to minimize the parent’s risk for recidivism (e.g., high parental expectations, anger, and aggressive problem solving).

The second session with discuss treatment strategies and materials for use with individual child victims. The procedures will illustrate methods designed to minimize the psychological sequelae of the experience (e.g., misattributions, aggression, social withdrawal).  Examples of specific procedures for use in each modality will be presented based on ongoing clinical applications and empirical studies. The integration of child and caregiver work (e.g., program site/format, motivation), and the incorporation of research/evaluation tools to document treatment course and outcome will be addressed.
