Description:

Utilizing creative definitions of culture, this session will explore the issues and challenges of diversity within the forensic interview setting.

Abstract:

Cultural competence is more than a catchphrase.  Effective forensic interviewers must be culturally competent in order to have an appropriate, sensitive, child-focused interview.  This session will illuminate the multiple definitions of culture and the considerations of diversity that must be considered when interviewing children for abuse or witnessing violence.  Additionally, individual cultural and communicative populations and issues will be discussed, including the use of interpreters, the race and sex of the interviewer, adolescents, GLBT youth, male victims, and developmental disabilities.  Since it is imperative that interviewers be aware of their own issues before interviewing children, the importance of self-inspection will be discussed.  This workshop includes lecture, handouts, PowerPoint, participant discussion, and video demonstration.
