Presenters: Michael de Arellano, Susana Rivera Abstract Category: Research Instruction Level: All Presentation: Not Provided
Description: Preliminary findings of a pilot study of Culturally Modified - Trauma Focused Treatment with Hispanic children will be presented.
Abstract: Culturally-Modified Trauma Focused Treatment (CM-TFT) was developed for use with Latino children and is based on Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (Cohen, Mannarino, & Deblinger, 2006). CM-TFT is a tailored approach to providing treatment that attempts to increase engagement by increasing the cultural relevance of the intervention. Potential cultural factors are assessed and integrated into treatment as necessary, including spirituality, familismo, gender roles, beliefs about sex, views of mental health and mental health treatment, racism/discrimination, amd exploitation. The is a pilot feasibility trial on Culturally Modified – Trauma Focused Treatment for Hispanic children in a sample of children that have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. Symptom improvement was measured utilizing pre- and post-treatment scores on the UCLA PTSD Reaction Index. In addition, level of acculturation, as measured by the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans – II (ARSMA-II), was measured as a predictor of improvement in posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, with the assumption that clients reporting a higher level of acculturation would show the greatest improvement (greatest decrease in symptoms) on the UCLA PTSD Reaction Index scores.
