Abstract:

Professionals responsible for conducting forensic interviews of children who have witnessed violent crime are becoming aware of the increasing impact of their interviewing techniques.  In recent years, defense strategies have shifted from targeting child witnesses to the interviewing professionals.  As a result, the demand for comprehensive training in the art and science of interviewing is on the rise.

Research suggests, and practice supports, that there is essential information professionals must learn in order to effectively interview children who have witnessed violent crime, including domestic violence, assault, and homicide.  Professionals will gain information on how to elicit necessary information in a manner that is in the best interests of children and is legally defensible.  Topics covered include: an effective interviewing protocol, the effects of trauma on children, issues to consider at the time of intake and following the interview, and how to gather pertinent details.  This workshop includes lecture, handouts, PowerPoint, participant discussion, and video demonstration.
