E6, F6 TRAUMA FOCUSED - CBT. TAKING IT INTO THE REAL WORLD
Presenters: Laura Merchant Abstract Category: Law
Instruction Level:
Description: Incorporation of TF-CBT with children using the evidence based PRACTICE components. Emphasis on engagement; assessment; and prioritizing implementing treatment interventions given the complexities of the victims and their families.
Abstract: TF-CBT is a proven evidence based intervention. It is assumed that participants are familiar TF-CBT and are actively seeing clients with trauma histories. Although this proven intervention for trauma is available, many therapists find it difficult to implement TF-CBT systematically in the field. The reported reasons involve therapist reluctance to rely on a manual and the diversity and complexity of cases that make a singular treatment focus difficult to maintain.
This workshop will address the realities of working with clients who have complex histories as well as social and familial dynamics that make it challenging to prioritize treatment and stay on task. Emphasis will be on assisting therapists on how to effectively assess for trauma history in relation to other clinical issues, prioritize treatment direction and interventions, and then how to engage clients (including caregivers) to define their own treatment goals and “buy off” on the treatment path (TF-CBT). Participants should understand the components of TF-CBT as these components will be referred to throughout the session. While some content will be didactic, there will be opportunity for case specific consultation, discussion and small group exercises.
