Description:

A review of CDC’s research and educational initiatives to prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome

Abstract:

While abusive head trauma (e.g., shaken baby syndrome) in infants and young children represents a small percent of child maltreatment, it is associated with high rates of morbidity, mortality, and long term disability.  Child maltreatment prevention is a priority of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at CDC.  This workshop will review how child maltreatment prevention and shaken baby prevention specifically fit within the goals of CDC’s work and will describe both research and national educational initiatives currently underway to prevent and raise awareness about shaken baby syndrome.
