Description:

The development and evaluation of coagulation abnormalities resulting from traumatic brain injury will be reveiwed and summarized.

Abstract:

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has long been known to cause clotting abnormalities in child and adults.  A variety of intrinsic and extrinsic clotting factors are involved in this process.  In this workshop we will review the following:

An overview of the coagulopathy cascade

An overview of fibrinolysis occuring after coagulation

A review of the specific changes in coagulation and fibrinolysis associated with head injuries

The appropriate coagulation work up in cases of suspected abusive head trauma cases

The prognostic value of coagulation abnormalities after TBI

The interpretation of blood tests regarding coagulation and fibrinolysis in cases of suspected abusive head injury

Coagulation abnormalities that can be confused with abusive head trauma.
