Description: The joint effort of the Child Welfare League of America and Lambda Legal, in collaboration with child and family serving organizations nation-wide, has developed and disseminated new tools to enhance the child welfare system’s capacity to better serve these historically vulnerable populations.
Abstract: The Child Welfare League of America, the nation’s oldest and largest membership-based child and family advocacy organization, is leading a national effort to improve the nation’s child welfare system’s capacity to serve lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. It’s initiative, entitled Fostering Transitions: CWLA/Lambda Joint Initiative to Support LGBTQ Youth and Adults Involved with the Child Welfare System, is a partnership with Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, the nation’s oldest and largest legal organization dedicated to the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and people with HIV or AIDS. Participants in this workshop will learn about the experiences of LGBTQ youth in foster care as well as national efforts to improve the treatment they receive. Participants will also develop a better understanding of LGBTQ issues through interactive training exercises, video presentations and group discussions
