Description:

The purpose of the workshop is to describe Culturally-Modified Trauma-Focused Treatment (CM-TFT), a tailored approach to providing trauma-focused treatment that attempts to increase engagement by increasing the cultural relevance of the intervention. The workshop will involve a description/overview of the treatment, target population, and findings from pilot work and focus groups and will include applied, interactive learning activities.

Abstract:

Research suggests that Hispanic children are at greater risk for child maltreatment and other types of victimization, which render them vulnerable to trauma-related problems. Cultural factors may impact reaction to trauma, expression of symptoms, and utilization of and adherence to treatment.  Unfortunately, research on evidence-based treatments and the potential effects of cultural factors among Hispanic populations is limited.  Evidence exists for the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy for Hispanic children.  TF-CBT (Cohen et al., 2006) is a well-researched psychosocial treatment with evidence for use with victims of CSA and other types of trauma.  The authors have developed a modified version of TF-CBT, Culturally-Modified Trauma-Focused Treatment (CM-TFT) for use with Hispanic trauma victims, based on research literature and clinical work with this population. CM-TFT is a tailored approach to providing treatment that attempts to increase engagement by increasing the cultural relevance of the intervention.  In collaboration with several NCTSN sites across the country, the intervention has been further developed to address the needs of Hispanic children from various countries of origin and levels of acculturation. The purpose of the workshop is to describe the treatment, present preliminary evidence, and give applicable case examples.  In addition, participants will have the opportunity to discuss potential needs for adaptation of evidence-based interventions with ethnic-minority populations in their own communities. After participating in both sessions of the workshop, participants will: 1) Identify the cultural factors important to consider in CM-TFT; 2) Become familiar with the adaptation of the TF-CBT components; 3) Develop skills in delivering CM-TFT.
