Description:

A California pilot project implementing trauma-informed training in child welfare departments and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy in mental health departments.

Abstract:

Many, if not most, children served by child welfare systems across the nation have extensive trauma histories ranging from child abuse and family violence to community violence and life threatening accidents but few child welfare systems have systematically prepared their workforce and service providers to respond in “trauma informed” manner.  California is currently implementing specialized training on “trauma informed child welfare” services for public child welfare staff matched with coordinated training of mental health providers in Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.  This session will focus on an overview of the project and lessons learned in this coordinated system change effort.
