Description: The first workshop will describe the SafeCare parenting program, it's history, research, and implementation considerations.
The second workshop will describe SafeCare's specific modules and practice elements.
Abstract: Currently, the Marcus Institute Center for Child Well-Treatment (CWT) in Atlanta, GA is providing SafeCare model parenting services for the prevention of child maltreatment in two urban Georgia counties through federal grant funds. Additionally, CWT holds a contract with the Georgia DHR Division of Public Health to train Nurse Home Visitors to implement SafeCare. Other locations across the country have also recently received grant funding to examine aspects of SafeCare. In the first workshop, the background of the SafeCare model will be presented. These replications will be discussed, including the primary and secondary prevention populations that are being served by them, the variety of professionals who are providing these services in other parts of the country, and the implications for staff training and implementation of the model. The second workshop will begin with a brief review and background of the SafeCare model. Following will be a detailed presentation of each of the three SafeCare modules, several of which have been recently revised by our CWT staff. Included in these modules are skill assessment and skill training in
1) Parent-Child and Parent-Infant Interactions,
2) Home Safety and Cleanliness, and
3) Infant and Child Health Care Skills.
An additional component on Counseling and Problem Solving skills will also be included. Recently-revised assessment forms for each of these modules will be introduced. Practical exercises will be included in the workshop, some of which may include observation of parent-child interaction videos, modeling of key SafeCare assessment procedures, modeling of key skill-training behaviors, and behavioral demonstration of Safety and Cleanliness home assessment.
